Mammatus Clouds
These are called MAMMATUS CLOUDS. They are pouch-like protrusions hanging down from the base of a more solid area of clouds. They are composed primarily of ice and typically only remain visible in the sky for perhaps 10 or 15 minutes at a time. The orange color is due to the sunset (longer wavelengths of sunlight only being seen). People associate them with severe weather. They’re formed by sinking air. Most clouds are formed by rising air. Mammatus clouds can appear ominous. But, in actuality, they are breathtaking and magnificent!
